How can we live as salt and light? The beatitudes offer an answer. The beatitudes are not a, “do this, get this,” formula. Instead, they are an invitation to walk as ambassadors of the New Covenant and a promise of what naturally will happen in a believer as they walk with the Spirit. The world is in turmoil around us, and peace is far from human hands and hearts. But believers have an identity and a hope that strengthens us to seek peace, setting aside our preferences, pride, and comforts to elevate Christ and serve one another in love. God poured the fullness of His wrath on Jesus; He will remember our sins no more. Our eternal peace is secured by blood that cannot be washed out, an indelible stain of grace on our hearts. Because God has first made peace with us through Christ, believers can now pursue peace with mankind. We can long for the good of those who persecute us, praying that God would turn enemies into friends into family, at peace with God and likewise transformed by His mercy into peacemakers.
